5 Things to Prepare Your Social History for That Job Interview
Whether you’re going on an interview for a part-time retail job to make some extra cash during college, or going for that dream job with the big tech company, employers are checking your social history. With tools like Pipl, Linkedin, FullContact, Rapportive, and more, it’s easier than ever for employers to do a quick search to see what their interviewees – YOU – have been up to.

There are several things you should do to prepare your social history for your first interviews. Obviously, you should get a Free Scrubber Report, but there’s a lot more you can do:
1. Google Yourself
This one might sound obvious, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. If you have a common enough name to have many duplicates, go at least 3 pages deep checking for things that relate to you. Do multiple searches: search with and without quotes around your name; search with and without your middle names; search full & short versions of names (Daniel & Dan); don’t forget the maiden name, ladies. You’d be surprised what kind of old things you’ll come up with.
2. Go through your online photos
This might sound hard, but it actually doesn’t take very long to scan through several hundred pictures on your social networks. On Twitter, just go to https://twitter.com/[screen_name]/media (ie. https://twitter.com/angilly/media). On Facebook, just go to https://www.facebook.com/me/photos. You can actually go to that link, and the “me” with automatically get replaced with your screen name.
3. Search your email for old social network messages
The Internet isn’t that old, but we’ve already gone through a ton of social networks. So many, that you might not even remember how active you were on Friendster or Myspace. Search through your email for phrases like “sent you a message” or “tagged you in a photo”. You might find old networks you forgot about.
4. Search for yourself on FullContact & Pipl
These applications are really powerful. Both have free tiers: http://www.pipl.com/ & http://www.fullcontact.com
5. Sit around and think for a while
Another one that might sound crazy, but sit around and just think for 10 minutes. Think about the first time you were on the Internet, in a chat room, who you used to converse with online. It may jar your memory and make you remember old posts or interactions that you want to clean up.
Remember, none of this is about hiding anything or being disingenuous. The simple truth of the matter is that we’re still all growing up with the Internet, and as we mature and our views change, it’s worth making sure your online presence represents the real you.
