How to Scrubber Your Social Media Accounts: Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, and More!
Social media has both positive and negative aspects. It can be said that social media platforms have had a positive impact on the world in several ways: they have helped bring people together, reunite families and friends, and foster connections with others who share similar interests and life experiences.

On the other hand, social media has also been used for harmful purposes—to incite anger, distrust, and fear, and to spread scams and misleading content. Just as positive and beneficial content can be amplified, so too can harmful material such as conspiracy theories, radicalization efforts, and hate-filled attacks against individuals or groups.
Much of social media’s impact depends on how we use these services. One challenge is that social media thrives on “engagement,” and posts that trigger strong emotions are more likely to prompt user interaction (such as liking, commenting on, or sharing a post). Higher engagement leads to more views, which in turn generates more advertising revenue for companies and content creators.
Some people decide to change the way they use social media; they might cut back on their usage or stop using certain platforms altogether. For those who prefer to delete their accounts entirely, this article explains how to remove your account from ten of the most popular social media services.
How to delete your Facebook account
Some social media services have a reach that extends beyond their apps or websites. Facebook is one of them. Your Facebook account not only allows you to access Facebook but also gives you access to Facebook Messenger—which you might use to message friends—as well as Instagram and Threads. Additionally, you can log in to many websites and services using your Facebook account, so if you delete it, you may need to change your login options for those services first.

Deleting your Facebook account is straightforward, but Facebook also offers the option to temporarily deactivate your account if you simply want to take a break. If you do this, all your content is preserved but hidden from view. Also, if you temporarily deactivate your account, you can still use Facebook Messenger and log in to other services.
If you decide to delete your account, it is a good idea to first download a copy of all your Facebook data, such as your posts and photos.
To delete your Facebook account on a computer:
Click the downward-facing triangle icon (▾) or your profile picture in the top-right corner of the Facebook page.
Click Settings & Privacy > Settings.
If “Accounts Center” appears in the top-left corner of your Settings menu, you can delete your account through this interface. If “Accounts Center” appears in the bottom-left corner of your Settings menu, you can delete your account via your Facebook settings.
To delete your account from Accounts Center, click Personal details under Account settings.
Click Account ownership and control, then click Deactivation or deletion.
You will see your accounts, which may include Facebook and Instagram. Click the account you want to delete, then click Delete account.
Click Continue, then follow the instructions.
Next, click “Your Facebook information,” then “Deactivation and deletion.”
If “Accounts Center” is at the bottom of your Settings menu, click Your Facebook information, then click Deactivation and deletion.
Select Delete account, then click Continue to account deletion. Click Delete account, enter your password, then click Continue.
To delete your Facebook account on a mobile device, start by tapping the three-horizontal-line menu (☰).
Tap the three-horizontal-line menu (☰).
Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings.
Tap Profile Access and Control.
Tap Deactivation and Deletion, then select Delete Account. Here, as mentioned above, you can choose to either deactivate or delete your account.
Tap Continue to Account Deletion, then tap Delete Account.
If you choose to deactivate your account and wish to reactivate it later, simply log in to Facebook.
Keep in mind that even after you delete your Facebook account, it is not immediately removed; there is a 30-day grace period. If you wish to recover your account, log in to Facebook and click Cancel Deletion.
How to delete your YouTube account
Technically, you do not have a standalone YouTube account; you have a Google account. Since YouTube is part of Google, your Google account is what grants you access to YouTube. While you might want to delete your Google account, ensure that you truly intend to do so.
Deleting your Google account will remove access to all Google products, such as Gmail, Google Drive, and so on. You may also be logged into various websites and services using your Google account, so deleting it could prevent you from accessing those other services.
To a certain extent, you can use YouTube without signing in to a Google account. (YouTube does sometimes require you to sign in—ostensibly to verify that you are not a bot.) Deleting your YouTube account does not necessarily prevent you from using the service while signed out.
How to delete your WhatsApp account
WhatsApp is popular as a messaging app, but it is also used for e-commerce in many countries. In some regions of the world, people rely on WhatsApp for essential services and may not be able to delete it. However, if you do want to delete your WhatsApp account, the process is quite simple.
Open the WhatsApp app. Tap More options > Settings > Account > Delete my account.
Enter your phone number along with the country code; if you are in the US, this means starting the number with +1, followed by the rest of the number, including the area code.
Select a reason for deleting your account, then tap Delete My Account.
If you delete your WhatsApp account, your message history will be erased, you will be removed from all WhatsApp groups you belong to, and your Google Drive backup will be deleted. WhatsApp states that it may take up to 90 days to fully delete your account, but no data from your account will be visible to anyone.
Although WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, account deletion is handled differently for WhatsApp. Once you delete your WhatsApp account, the action cannot be undone.
How to delete your Instagram account
Instagram is also owned by Facebook, and—as with Facebook services—you can choose to temporarily deactivate your Instagram account if you wish. You can also download a copy of all your Instagram data before deleting your account. Your Instagram account also serves as your account for Threads, if you use that service. Therefore, deleting your Instagram account will also delete your Threads account.
Instagram does not make it easy to find out how to delete your account; there is no option within the Instagram app itself, and searching the app’s Help section won’t reveal how to do it. However, the process is actually simple if you know the trick: just visit the “Delete Your Account” page on a computer or mobile device, select a reason for deletion, enter your password, and then click or tap Delete [USERNAME].
How to delete your TikTok account
Deleting a TikTok account is very easy, as it should be. One reason for this is that, unlike Facebook or Google, TikTok is not linked to other accounts or services.
Tap the Profile tab, then tap the three-horizontal-line menu (☰) at the top right of the screen.
Tap Settings and Privacy, then tap Account.
Tap Deactivate or delete account, then follow the instructions to delete your account.
You might want to download your TikTok data—especially your videos—before deleting your account. To do this, read this article. TikTok states that it may take up to 30 days for this data to become available, but once it is, you only have four days to download it; therefore, you need to check the TikTok app periodically to see if the data is ready.
How to delete your Snapchat account
Snapchat is another service that makes account deletion easy. All you need to do is log in to the Accounts portal, enter your username and password, and follow the instructions.

You can access this page from within the Snapchat app, but only if you search for “delete account” under Support > “I need help” in Settings. You can also access this page on a computer using the link above.
Snapchat does not delete your account immediately; it is first deactivated for 30 days and then permanently deleted. So, if you change your mind, simply log back into Snapchat before the 30 days are up to reactivate the account.
How to delete your Reddit account
Reddit is more like a collection of forums than a social media service, so if you delete your Reddit account, none of your posts or comments will be deleted. If you want all your old content removed as well, you must go through each post and comment and delete them manually. This FAQ page explains what you need to do.
Deleting a Reddit account is quite easy. Click your username, then click Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the page and, in the Advanced section, tap Delete Account and follow the instructions. If you have a Reddit Premium subscription, you must cancel it first.
How to delete your Pinterest account
Pinterest, like some other social media services, offers the ability to deactivate or close your account. Both options can be accessed via the down-arrow menu on the Pinterest website or by tapping your profile picture in the Pinterest app. To deactivate your Pinterest account:
Click or tap Account Settings.
Scroll down and tap Deactivate Account.
Tap Next, state your reason for leaving, then click or tap Deactivate Account.
To close your Pinterest account:
In a web browser, click Settings, then Account management in the left sidebar. In the mobile app, tap your profile picture at the top right of the screen, then tap Account management.
In a web browser, click Delete Account, then Continue. In the mobile app, tap Delete your data and account.
Explain why you want to close the account, then click or tap Next.
Click or tap Send Email; Pinterest requires you to confirm the account deletion by clicking or tapping the link in the confirmation email.
If you wish to close a business account, Pinterest states that you may need to contact support for assistance. You must settle any outstanding bills and ensure there are no ongoing expenses before the account can be closed.
When you close your account, Pinterest deactivates your public profile but waits 14 days before permanently deleting the account. If you decide to keep the account, simply log in to Pinterest, and you will receive an email link to reactivate it.
How to delete your X (formerly Twitter) account
X does not allow you to delete your account immediately; you must deactivate it first, and the deactivation period lasts for 30 days. This is similar to how Facebook and other platforms operate.
When you delete your X account, you will lose your username, but the account cannot remain deactivated for longer than 30 days. So, if you think you might want to use Twitter again, you need to log in to the account before the 30-day period ends, then deactivate it again. After the selected period, the account will be deleted.
Keep in mind that if you use X for messaging, all your direct messages will be deleted when your account is deleted.
To deactivate your X account:
Click or tap the ellipsis icon (•••), then Settings and privacy.
Click or tap Your account, then Deactivate your account.
Click or tap Deactivate, enter your password, and click or tap the final Deactivate account button.
How to delete your LinkedIn account
Compared to other social media networks, LinkedIn is perhaps the most low-key. This is because it is essentially a professional social network for people looking to connect with businesses, find jobs, or recruit employees. Nevertheless, you might want to delete your LinkedIn account. Here is how to do it:
Click or tap your profile picture, then click or tap **Settings & Privacy**, followed by **Account preferences**.
Scroll down to the **Account management** section, then click or tap **Change** next to **Close account**.
Select the reason you want to leave, then click or tap **Next**.
Enter your password, then click or tap **Close Account**.
When you close your LinkedIn account, some of your information may still appear in search engines for a period of time. If you have a premium LinkedIn account or membership, or if you own a LinkedIn group, you must resolve those matters before you can delete your personal account.
Since LinkedIn focuses on connections, you might want to download a copy of your data before deleting your account.
